Salary: £48,545 up to £60,000 dependent upon experience

Contract Type: full time, permanent

We are the UK's aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

The UK CAA is in the process of building the capacity and technical capability of our Air Safety Unit. This team’s key responsibility is to assess and make recommendations on the compliance of Third Country Operators (TCO) against globally established and agreed aviation safety standards. These recommendations are reported to the UK Air Safety Committee (ASC) who in turn will make their determinations. If the operator is determined to have failed to meet the required standards they will be added to the UK’s Air Safety List (ASL) and subsequently banned from operating in UK Airspace, or vice versa.

As a Case Handler for the ASU, it will be your role to lead on safety determination cases. This will involve often very detailed investigations and multifactorial analyses of the performance of foreign airlines. It is vital that we always bear the political nature of this exercise in mind and that we work hard to ensure that the process is accurate, fair and deftly handled. To do this effectively you will have to draw information from a wide variety of verifiable sources of intelligence as well as maintain clear lines of communication with all parties. This is ultimately done to ensure that the ASL is kept accurate, up to date, fair and that we are proliferating global aviation safety practices.

This role will often deal with parties at state level and you should be confident in your role as a technical advisor and subject matter expert. To this end, you must be able to effectively express our points of view, utilising a diplomatic approach to broach often nuanced determinations in a culturally sensitive way.

Aircraft Airworthiness Case Handler

As an expert in airworthiness, you will be able to accurately and effectively determine if overseas operators and National Aviation Authorities have all the components in place to meet international safety standards. Using your knowledge and diplomacy you will be able to investigate and evaluate airworthiness standards in an airline or National Aviation Authority. You will also communicate your results in a fair, transparent and constructive manner to achieve continuous improvement in international aviation safety standards.

Your background should cover continuing airworthiness requirements and maintenance organisation approvals – Ideally you have had knowledge in EASA Part 66 Certifying staff and EASA Part 147 Technical training.

About You

  • Extensive experience working in an Airworthiness or Aerospace Design Engineering function within the aviation industry
  • A confident communicator who is used to influencing and negotiating with partners at all levels of business and government
  • Possess a detailed understanding and appreciation of internationally recognised Civil Aviation safety standards, practices and regulatory frameworks (ICAO, EASA, IATA, IASA etc)
  • An unrestricted ability to travel globally and a subsequent willingness to travel to conduct safety assessments
  • A leader and a people person who can effectively drive delivery and motivate others to achieve

What Can We Offer You?

This is an extremely high-profile opportunity, working at the highest levels of aviation decision making. Your work in this area will not only impact thousands daily but will raise your profile in the international aviation community. Additionally, if you are motivated by the idea of helping to create a better, fairer and safer aviation environment then this is a phenomenal chance to make that aspiration a reality.

The UK CAA Air Safety Unit will give you the opportunity to influence aviation safety at home and overseas. By assessing third country operators and other states and ensuring that they meet international safety standards, you will play a vital role in managing the UK Air Safety List on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.
